Hi All,

Weather was beautiful, warmer Sunday and sunny. (Visit was Jan 4-5)

First thing on the agenda was to look at the spring issue and take pictures for PCBM. Lots of water, just not making it into the pipe.

Overflow of dam is running fine. I'm sure it could benefit from clearing of cattails but at this point they are not obstructing the flow.
  • Perfect conditions for weeding, so I made great progress on pulling euphorbia and digging out poorly positioned live oak volunteers.
  • Cleaned up area around steps to ramp. Raked around persimmon ++
  • Started new pile for chipper in a place I think will not be in the way.
  • raked oak leaves from path to back gate.
  • cleared ash from fireplace.
  • We emptied incinerator at dump then took it to the lake.
  • Spent a couple hours clearing yellow star thistle and burning it in incinerator. Mowing once the flowers have gone to seed just spreads the seed. This method spreads some seed too but destroys most. Just an experiment. Best method is carefully timed mowing. But that requires recognizing the right conditions and being there to do it. I am not yet comfortable with the idea of driving the mower down there. Too wet now anyway.
The current incinerator has come to the end of its lifespan. Though we do not burn garbage anymore, there are times and conditions where it is good to have one there by the house.
I have demarcated some small native plants in the area by the lake where we were working on star thistle. These are Foothill Penstemon getting a foothold there and I am hoping to keep them from getting mowed or driven over. Just used materials close at hand...Victor couldn't decipher it, so here are photos to convey my message:

Kitchen:
There was evidence of mouse activity on the counter, inside the toaster, inside the stainless containers holding wooden spoons, on the dish drain, under the sink (including amongst the storage containers) and in the window. I cleaned all of these places/things and saw no new evidence the next morning. I think we have never had a mouse on the marble table, so I suggest setting toaster, etc over there overnight and when leaving. Easy enough to do.
Couldn't find the meat thermometer.
Down to very little olive oil.

Items needed:
  • 55 gallon drum for incinerator. hopefully a repurposed, inexpensive one. Allan has a special tool to cut the lid off if it is one that doesn't have a removable lid.
  • olive oil
  • meat thermometer

I couldn't find my orange bucket and a short handled lopper I keep up there. The only place I did not check was in the green Jeep, maybe left there from last visit.

There is always more to do up there and we look forward to getting back soon.
Ingrid and Victor
