Silt Trap Cleaning, Fire Prevention and Clean Up, and More Water Leaks
Report from Peter W.
Update from last week's trip:
Peter
Update from last week's trip:
- Brought up 15 bags of pea gravel to broadcast under round table and into the open area towards pathway. Will bring more bags when able to finish open area in front of BBQ and supplement path.
- Opened silt trap below spring after noticing water dripping out of the top. Opened it to find clogged pipes, mostly due to moss. Brought down several sections of hose to blow out lines, including the drain line at the silt trap. The tank was really full of silt and moss. Scrubbed entire inside of tank with bleach, flushed many times down to the lower tank clean out and reconnected everything. I am not entirely sure what Allan's process is to clean the silt trap but a full, extensive cleaning is very necessary at least 1x per year. Note: The current silt trap was burned during the fire and a new - stainless steel silt trap and all connections are included in the new waterline proposal.
- Cut - with chainsaw - the burned remnants/stalks of scrub oaks (hard black sticks poking out of the ground lakeside) and cut as much of the scrub oaks as possible. There is a large pile at the lake that needs to be hauled to behind the lake area.
- My Dad brought up his small generator and mouse sander for Allan to start working on finishing work at pump house. He also started chipping all the excess mortar away from cinder blocks. It will take some time to get the pump house finished, between Allan and my Dad. I don't even mention Andrew Pepper's name as the two of them are so irritated at the really really bad workmanship. On another note, the pier work he did is pretty lame, but you get what you pay for, as they say.
- Weed-wacked some of the weeds coming up on the West side of the pump house.
- Hauled away the remaining wood, etc. from the shelving removed for the solar system equipment.
- Raked all piles from the downed apricot tree and grape vines, and a lot of leaves/grass from around the house. Put it all in the hole in the hillside by wood shed.
- My Dad took the Shang chainsaw home as it was missing a couple screws. He found this out when we had to cut up a tree that had fallen over the road. Brought the chainsaw back after taking it to Bar-Hein in Sacramento and getting new screws. It is back in the garage.
- My Dad measured area around support line for main gate which runs under a large branch of the Oak. He will be installing a new support that will run over the branch so as to not encumber or interfere with the tree branch. Better for gate, better for tree.
- Watered, watered, and watered. Everything that a hose could reach.
- My Dad is up at the Ranch now for solar installation project. They crew arrive early this morning and started to lay out equipment, dimensions, install housing, etc. My Dad reviewed all work, areas, plan, etc. with John (North Bay Solar). They have not received the solar water pump. I spoke to my Dad and the crew is only working one day (today) and will return next week on Wednesday. My Dad will talk with Allan to see if he can oversee next week as he needs a break from all the trips. If Allan is not available, he will plan to go up. He plans on sending photos of what has been brought up and/or delivered so far.
- When my Dad arrived, the water tank was MUCH lower than when we left it. He found, yet, another leak in the water line and water was leaking out since we pumped last weekend. There is a hypothesis that the fires have stressed the existing line, leaving it weak and vulnerable to leaks (large and small). Don't know, but it seems like a new leak each week and different areas in the main line. He fixed the leak in the line and watered around the house.

Lots happening!
Peter W & C and Rosemary Sure Know How!
Peter's report:
My Dad, Rosemary and myself went up this past Friday-Saturday to take up some items and finish some projects.
- My Dad reinstalled the main door latch after he and Allan had to cut it out during the last visit in which the small lock/latch fell during Ingrid's last visit. Big project that took both of them to get the door open, including removing molding, etc. Latch was saw cut to get door open. My dad took the latch home and re-welded, painted, etc. He reinstalled the molding, Allan will paint (or has). Anyway, the door is back to normal again. The locking piece has been removed so this will never happen again.
- Rosemary donated a teak patio table with 4 side chairs and 2 arm chairs. My dad sanded and oiled all pieces and the set looks great. Some of the chairs need some tightening and that is on the list but is fine to use. I have ordered a cover to fit over it when not in use. (see photo). It is smaller than our house patio table and “race track” shape, which fits well on the paver patio.
- Rosemary did a lot of weed eating all around the lakeside area. I did mowing. We brought down the mower - big job - but necessary. We need a replacement mower for the one lost. We also removed old burned wood in ground. We had several hoses strung together from the tanks and were able to water down the area, spray wash too. Important to have water on hand when we used the equipment for fire safety. Both umbrellas work well but one of the canopies is too large. Works OK though.
- When my dad arrived, he found the grape vine and apricot branch collapsed on the bridge. Had to cut it up and clean-up. (see photo below).
- He also reported cleaning up 5-6 large raccoon poops all around the house. They were gorging themselves on grapes and pooped on patio, steps, porch, etc. I envision a scene with many raccoons lounging at Shang and making a mess.
- The Fuyu was looking like it was on its last legs. SO dry. All leaves curled hard and yellow. My dad put hose on it immediately and let is slow soak for a couple hours. By the next morning, it was green again and leaves were opening up. There is no fruit on the Fuyu. Perhaps it is not producing fruit as it is in survival mode. Maybe deer ate them all. Who knows.
- We did a lot of watering while we were there. Everything was very, VERY dry. Nobody has been up!
- My dad cleaned the house patio.
- Pumped for 3 hours total. Left full tank of gas at pump house.
- There are several LARGE bear poops inside the compound.
- My dad delivered several pieces of material needed to finish the pump house after the "Pepper experiment". Allan and my dad have divided up the various items that need finishing, repaired, etc. on the pump house. Everyone should take a trip to the pump house area to inspect and pick up any and all debris, trash, etc. in the area. Many of us have picked up trash and hauled away but there seems to always be more.
- My dad fixed another leak in the old line above the pool.
- Large tree near Gaither’s fell across the road Friday night. My dad cut it up and we removed pieces from road.
- Between the three of us, we hauled away several items of junk/trash.
- Green jeep is still up at Allan’s. He has received some of the parts but the Jeep repair/parts place in Santa Rosa, which is Allan’s go-to for old jeep parts, has been having trouble finding a steering box for a ’41 Willys. My understanding is that if a part cannot be found, one can be made but Allan will keep us posted.
- All chipping piles made by Sophia, Ingrid, and Victor have been chipped and broadcast under the trees behind the areas where the piles were made. There are now new piles that need to be moved away from the house from various collapsed apricot and grape vines.
Refrigerator: The refrigerator is no longer keeping anything cool in the main compartment. We had to throw many things out. FYI, the refrigerator is set to MAX. The freezer is still cool but not really freezer cold. There were a couple of pints of ice cream left in the freezer and they were liquid. If you come up, be prepared to have a cooler with ice to keep things cold.
Solar System: North Bay Solar Electric is scheduled to start the installation of the new solar system on Wed, August 18th. My dad will be onsite the entire time to oversee. They hope to have everything 100% installed by Sat, August 21st. Of course, that depends on many things, but that is the plan. During our last trip up, we removed the shelving at the equipment site in the garage, cleaned the entire work area, and hauled away debris. Most items were relocated to the front of the garage (as green jeep is at Allan’s). All hand tools were moved to wood shed until project is complete.
Front porch panels. Given that the front porch is screened, is there any reason to keep the acrylic panels installed during the summer months? The thermometer on the front porch was reading 102 degrees in the afternoon. This is a lot of trapped heat right against the house/windows.
Air Quality/Fire: We had very hot but off and on cloudy weather (monsoon-like) and the wind kicked up later on Friday. "OK" air quality most of Friday but the wind blew in clean air from the West. Later in the evening we started to smell smoke as the Coyote Fire started that day above Hidden Valley Lake. Smoke was gone for us in a couple hours thanks to wind. Last I heard, Coyote Fire was 50% contianed and far from Shang. NOTE: Jake has specifically told several of us that we can drive around all his new roads that he had made on the top of his property, some of which connect to our roads. I suspect he has provided this invitation as he regularly drives around our roads with his son on ATVs. Regardless, whether or not driving around is your thing, it is worth doing as a primary purpose of his new roads was to connect to access roads that go to Aetna Springs Valley area as an alternative route off our property in the event fire approaches from our entrance road.
That is all for now.

Watering, Apricot Tree Repair, Pump House
& Solar System
My Dad, Vince, Penny and Miya were up last weekend. Allan was around for a lot of the time. Weather was hot but cool enough at night.
Peter W.
- Watered a lot. All around the house and over and up the hill to all the old fruit trees.
- My Dad cut the felled apricot and left as much as he could. Allan, Vince and he worked on trimming it as best as possible. Time will tell how it recovers but it has a fighting chance.
- In and among the apricot tree was an established grape vine. Vince and my dad worked to untangle and re-thread the grape vine along the stair railings and tie them.
- The Mr. Pepper experiment has come to an end and there is a lot to finish on the pump house. After many, many reminders to come and pick up his equipment, he is gone and never to return. There is a lot of nails, staples, and random construction debris trash all over and we have been picking up as we find it. Allan will be using his magnetic roller to pick up what he can but there is a lot of non-metalic items to pick up. This will most likely be a work weekend project. Anyway, he is gone and never to return.
- My Dad and Allan assessed the state of the "finished" pump house and made a long list of items to be completed. Allan has been given a list of items to complete to make the pump house "whole" and to finish up items that Allan knows that need to be completed - correctly. My Dad also has a list of items to work on so we'll see how much they can complete.
- There is brush starting to grow around the denuded area surrounding the pump house. Some of it is OK but some needs to be dealt with (e.g. tar weeds, etc.). Allan might be able to do some smoothing work with his tractor. He is evaluating.
- Solar System:
- The area where all the hand tools lived has been cleared out in preparation for the electrical connection work at the existing electrical panel. All items from this area have been placed in the wood shed, temporarily.
- The designated wall where the solar charging system is to be located has been cleared. The old shelving is piled outside the garage and needs to be hauled away. It is full of nails, FYI. This wall is where the charging equipment will be installed. After that, we will evaluate to determine what shelving can be installed on the wall in any space not occupied by the solar charging equipment. All items from that wall have been temporarily relocated to the front of the garage as there is currently room since the green jeep is at Allan's for mechanical work.
- We confirmed the Board's preference for the electrical conduit route to go up the corner of the garage where the garage meets the stone wall (on wall where bathroom window is located).
- North Bay Solar Electric has the project scheduled for mid-August. Exact dates to confirmed soon.
- Pumped for a couple hours. Pump is working well now and the timer is installed.
- Found yet another leak in the water line (see attached video-below) above the old pool area. Patched that as our last project. Our old water line is really Swiss cheese. FYI, there is good news on the approval of the waterline/water system proposal. More on that in a separate email.
- The front door to the main room was locked when my Dad arrived. After two hours attempting to get in, he contacted Allan to assist and the two of them had to remove the center molding and cut the lever to open the door. It turns out that the small locking mechanism on the level was engaged when it was last closed. My Dad reinstalled the central molding and Allan is going to repaint the door.
- My Dad took the lever/handle home and will weld the lever back together.
- I measured all the heights, depths, and widths for new refrigerator and stove. Spoke to Al about where he got his, delivery, etc. Our current fridge is really struggling to keep cool, FYI. It is almost to the point where the freezer is most effective. As I mentioned at our board meeting, we need to move soon on replacing items we plan on replacing (table, lawn mower, Rubbermaid shed, etc.). Again, more on this as it relates to insurance stuff.
- I dumped the "root killer" in the first-floor toilet when we left. This should be done every couple years.

The Board and shareholders met on site for a thorough meeting and much-overdue gathering. Ingrid, Sophia, and Victor had come up the previous weekend and the night before, and have done a huge amount of fire prevention work around the property. Peter C. has also been making many trips up to coordinate with the pipe repair and pump house rebuilding. Peter W. has also been doing a lot of work on site and behind the scenes dealing with insurance, legal, and keeping track of the Shang budget. More details of all of those projects will be coming soon. Many thanks to everyone who has been working so hard to help Shang recover from the wildfires.
So, who was there? Peter W., Peter C., Rosemary, Scarlet, Beck, Ingrid, Victor, Sophia, Daniel, Katie, and Randy. In keeping with Shang tradition, there was a fabulous spring potluck that was enjoyed around the big round table.
Protecting Shang from wildfire is the top priority. It's important to rake, weed-whack, and water every time anyone visits. Additional projects that will be tackled in the coming weeks are painting the upper-tank, protecting the back porch, and continuing to clear brush and branches that are part of our fire prevention efforts.
A new, printable calendar is now available on the website. Now, the Shang calendar is both available digitally through Google Calendar and in a printable pdf.

Ingrid brought up the fun photo below of an early Shang Work Weekend. We think it is from about 2001. Any help with dating this photo?
Send us more old photos! We'll add them to our History Page!

Peter W., Rosemary, Tessa, Katie, Sophia--We sure know how!
Finally, Ingrid reported a grey fox sighting on the patio when she arrived. It's always great to hear about wildlife sightings!

Including Spring Weed Clean Up Notes
I made a solo day trip on Sunday. The highlight of the trip was a sighting of a Great Blue Heron at the lake. Normally I would tackle weeding and weed whacking around the house at this time of year but my back could not tolerate it.
So ;-) here is what needs to be done on the southeast side of the house, see picture below:
This is the procedure for first-of-the-season clean-up. Later, the area requires less detail work and can be mostly mowed with the big mower.
Hand pull the sticky bedstraw (Gallium) that is covering the ground under the alder tree. You can't mow it or weed whack it. Thankfully it pulls up easily.
Stihl string trimmer is the tool to use when knocking down the tall growth.
Weed whack tall sticker-producing stalks of dried fiddleneck (amsinkia), sanicle (more stickers) and dried grasses, avoiding the still green narcissus leaves.
Tidy up narcissus leaves. They can be w-whacked or mowed later, when they are fully dried.
Bed next to the stone wall of house/stair, under apricot/grape/oleander, needs to be cleared of all weeds. This area needs some sort of weed block and then stone (not chips). part of firescaping topic.
ReportIng:
Poison oak patch to the left of swimming pool that was treated with RoundUp by clearing crew has not reappeared!
rosemary looks stressed -- watered it, rose and azalea area.
I think Andrew Pepper arrived midday Sunday. I went down to the lake not long after and he wasn't there. So, didn't talk with him.
There was a dead mouse on the kitchen floor. I have no idea how it died, why it would be there on the floor...?
There is a piece of flashing on the northwest side of the house that has come loose and flaps around in the wind. How to fix that? need a very tall ladder.
It was very windy everywhere but at the house. Heard a large tree crash down in the upper forest.
Only 2000 gallons left in the upper tank. Need to re-activate the pumping system. The upper tank should be kept as full as possible. Job for Allan?
Brought balsamic vinegar, Dawn dish detergent, kosher salt
Fixed a kitchen drawer that had come off it's track.
Need a new cover for the Weber BBQ

All four Franks came up to celebrate Katie's birthday weekend. We had a really great time and enjoyed the springtime weather. It was the perfect temperature. Randy and Jason actually jumped in the lake--Owen and Katie decided to sit this one out!
Pump house construction was continuing through the weekend. They are making good progress. We watered all around the house and most everything on the hill and trees inside gate. The California poppies, lilacs, apple tree, and roses were all blooming and beautiful.
After locking up, we realized we had the hat from the main room and the phone charger. We put those in the upstairs bathroom, an unlikely place, but sure to be found.

Quick report:
- CalFire was "swamped" all afternoon, not able to make the appointment. I rescheduled for Sat. 3/13/21, 1:00 PM.
- Gaithers have cleared access from main road near dirt pile into the scorched area that is their property uphill from our lake. See picture below.
- Jake has installed address signs for his, Allan’s and our properties at key forks in road (pic below). This will have its first test by the people it is most important to be clear for when firefighters make their way up the road for the inspection.
- Andrew Pepper, carpenter, was up on Sunday to work on pumphouse foundation. Said he'd be back again Monday.

Peter W. provided this update from his visit.
Updates from this past weekend:
Updates from this past weekend:
- Dragged main road and new road to lake. Drag got caught up in dirt/mud at back side of lake area so it is sitting there. Will be moved during next trip.
- Cleaned gutters and downspouts. Old leaf guards are starting to fail in a couple areas. My dad is thinking about installing a better system (metal mesh you can get at Costco for about $200).
- Connected blue drain hose to downspout.
- Put up acrylic panels on the back porch and the front porch.
- Trimmed dead wood on olive tree by house.
- Culled many of the remaining persimmons.
- Put teak steamer chairs on back deck.
- Put cushions on third floor.
- Picked up trimming piles and put them next to road outside of fence for next chipping program visit.
- Put new auto insurance cards in bureau (where they are normally kept)
